25 February 2006: Eye Screening Surya

202 staff from the Surya garment factory in Sanur were tested by the YKI Screening team. 63 pairs of glasses were issued to those who required refractive correction.


20 February 2006: Eye Screening Serangan Island

230 villagers with eye problems were examined at a joint screening with Rumah Sakit Indera on Serangan Island in the south of Bali. Twelve patients with cataracts were identified, and were operated in the South Bali Mobile Eye Clinic. The YKI Team gave free spectacles to 93 patients who required refractive correction.


15 February 2006: Eye Screening Conrad Hotel

79 staff from the Conrad Hotel were tested by the YKI Screening Team as a follow-up to the village screening funded by the Conrad in December 2005.


14-15 February 2006: Cleft operations

Three cleft palate operations were performed in the Puri Raharja Hospital, Denpasar by local surgeon, Dr Anom, with volunteer anaesthetist, Dr Sukra.


3 February 2006: HWT conference in Kuala Lumpur

John Fawcett gave a presentation on behalf of the Foundation to around 800 articipants at Harvey World Travel’s Annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur. He was joined by some of the HWT people who had visited the Bali office and North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic in September 2005. Harvey World Travel is a major sponsor of JFF/YKI, contributing the bulk of administration expenses.


23-25 January 2006: Cleft operations

One cleft palate and three cleft lip operations were performed in the Puri Raharja Hospital, Denpasar by local surgeon, Dr Anom, with volunteer anaesthetist, Dr Sukra, who gave his time and skills free of charge for these patients from poor families.


2-14 January 2006: Ophthalmic Volunteer, Dr Johnny Wu

Dr Johnny Wu, ophthalmic registrar from Perth WA, was funded by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists to spend two weeks with the Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project in Bali. Dr Wu worked with local Balinese ophthalmologists in the clinic at the Rumah Sakit Indera in Denpasar, and also with the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic in Melaya in the north-west of the island. Dr Johnny Wu demonstrating phaco techniques in the Foundation’s new mobile eye clinic being trialled in Melaya, Bali.


2-24 January 2006: Ophthalmic Volunteer, Dr Ian Spencer

Dr Ian Spencer, ophthalmologist from Western Australia, spent three weeks with the Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project in January. He traveled to Lombok to observe and assist in the Lombok Clinic, then to South Kalimantan to monitor the progress of the mobile eye clinic, and assess the newly-appointed ophthalmologist, Dr Siska. Dr Spencer also spent time with the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic Team, trialling the Foundation’s new mobile eye clinic in the remote western part of Bali.

4-14 January 2006: Lombok Eye Clinic

A team of volunteer ophthalmologists from Italian NGO Una Sola Vita, led by Dr Alessandro Pezzola, conducted a two-week operating/training session in Phaco surgical techniques in the Lombok Eye Clinic. The team screened around 400 villagers and performed 48 free cataract operations, bringing the total number of operations in the Lombok Clinic to 144.


January 2006: Colostomy operation

Two-year-old Ketut Warayana is the fourth child of a poor farmer and market vendor from Singaraja in the north of Bali. He was born with an imperforate anus, and underwent a colostomy operation at that time. YKI organized two further operations – one in November 2005 to open his colostomy and install catheters, and one in January 2006 to close the colostomy again. As a result of the operations, Ketut should be able to live a normal life.



January 2006: New Mobile Eye Clinic

YKI took delivery of its new mobile eye clinic in early January. The provision of this clinic and its associated equipment has been funded by Fred Murrell, USA, and YKI is seeking ongoing funding to operate this clinic outside of Bali. The new clinic was trialled in Melaya, west Bali in conjunction with the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic team.
