Low Vision Clinic Workshops

Ute Shierhorn, a volunteer low vision specialist from Perth, Australia, has donated the last year to setting up a Low Vision Clinic in the Rumah Sakit Indera in Denpasar, where the Foundation's hospital-based cataract operations are performed. Ute has trained an assistant, Kadek Armayanti, to take over the running of the clinic in 2005.

Kadek ran a workshop at the Blind School in Denpasar in December , giving a 30-minute presentation about new computer programs for people with low vision, with a practical demonstration of Zoom Text and JAWS.

13-15 December 2004:
Review Visit to Mobile Eye Clinic in South Kalimantan

Dr Peter Graham (Volunteer Consultant Ophthalmologist), Wayan Sukajaya (Projects Officer) and Penny Lane (Executive Officer) traveled to Tanjung, South Kalimantan to do an annual review of the mobile eye clinic project funded by PT Adaro. Like the Mobile Eye Clinic in Bali, this project provides cataract operations free of charge to poor villagers.

Dr Graham was impressed with the quality of the surgery performed by Dr Nofri, who has been with the project since its inception in May 2003, and with the excellent support the project enjoys from the local health departments and the village health centres.

Dr Nofri, who has performed over 1000 cataract operations on poor people in South Kalimantan, is due to finish his contract with the project in March 2005. A replacement ophthalmologist will be trained in Bali early in the new year.
One of the Balinese ophthalmologists being trained in cataract surgery for the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic accompanied the visiting group to see at firsthand the workings of this very successful mobile clinic project.

17-18 November 2004:
Cleft Lip and Palate Operations

Nine cleft lip and palate children were operated on 17 and 18 November in a session with Dr Tim Cooper, volunteer plastic surgeon from Perth.

The operations were covered by direct funding contributions from donors, including the Seminyak Rotary Club in Bali. The operations were used as a training session for a young Balinese surgeon, Dr Anom, who works in the Puri Raharja Hospital in Denpasar. Dr Jaya Kesuma also assisted with the operations.

15-19 November 2004:
Fundraising Trip to Perth Rotary Clubs

John Fawcett visited Perth to talk to local Rotary Clubs about the Foundation and its humanitarian work in Bali. With the generous assistance of Michael Goff and Win Jones, he gave presentations to nine Clubs.

It is hoped that, from this visit, more funds will be raised by the Clubs, either through sales of Bali Eye on Indonesia, or through donations to support the projects.
