Review Visit to Mobile Eye Clinic in South Kalimantan |
| |
Dr Peter Graham
(Volunteer Consultant Ophthalmologist), Wayan Sukajaya
(Projects Officer) and Penny Lane (Executive Officer)
traveled to Tanjung, South Kalimantan to do an annual
review of the mobile eye clinic project funded by PT
Adaro. Like the Mobile Eye Clinic in Bali, this project
provides cataract operations free of charge to poor
villagers.
Dr Graham was impressed with the quality
of the surgery performed by Dr Nofri, who has been with
the project since its inception in May 2003, and with
the excellent support the project enjoys from the local
health departments and the village health centres.
Dr Nofri, who has performed over 1000
cataract operations on poor people in South Kalimantan,
is due to finish his contract with the project in March
2005. A replacement ophthalmologist will be trained
in Bali early in the new year.
One of the Balinese ophthalmologists being trained in
cataract surgery for the North Bali Mobile Eye Clinic
accompanied the visiting group to see at firsthand the
workings of this very successful mobile clinic project.
