Children's Corrective Surgery

Few things are more distressing to a child than disfigurement. It can cause social dislocation and personal despair. The aim of this program is to alleviate distress and suffering amongst the poor who suffer from easily repairable genetic deformities which prevent them from having a normal life.

The program is based on the concept of transfer of technology and equipment. Visiting volunteer consultants teach Indonesian medical personnel and upgrade their skills so that they can assist in solving the problems of their own people. Donated funds and equipment support this program which takes place in hospitals that treat the poor in Bali. As with all the programs undertaken by the Foundation, all operations are provided free of charge to the poor.

The program comprises:

Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery

'This program was set up in 1989 with the assistance of Rotary to help young Balinese afflicted by cleft lips and palates, and now runs under the auspices of the Foundation. A cleft operation gives the patient a whole new start to life.

Cleft lip and palate operations carried out since the program's inception:
1,492
(updated to end May 2008)

RECENT OPERATIONS >

Orthodontics Program

Many of the children operated in the Foundation’s Cleft Lip and Palate Program also have very crooked teeth as a result of their original deformity, and JFF/YKI has a program working with a local Balinese dentist to provide basic orthodontic treatment to straighten their teeth with wires and regular adjustment. This is a long process, but hopefully very rewarding for the patient at the end, enabling him or her to smile at last – with confidence.

Facial Reconstructive Surgery

This program concentrates on the provision of plastic surgery to correct facial disfigurements

This young boy from West Papua underwent facial surgery with Rotary-funded support.
